Media & Design

Our department didn’t have a logo so I designed this one - a Greek amphora with Mount Baker peeking out from some clouds at the top.

Classics at Western (2022)

When I started teaching at Western, we had the same dilemma that every world languages department is facing - enrollment was dropping. The Latin and Greek classes were at their lowest participation in years, and when I asked what had been done about it no one seemed to have an answer. So I designed the trifold flyer below to pass out during our fall Info Fair.

The final image of two conjoined birds looking forward and backward, meant to be reminiscent of the Roman god Janus (see below).

Janua Studio Logo

I had started a little craft business a few years ago, and called it Janua Studio. Janua can mean ‘door’ in Latin, and is related to Janus, the two-headed Roman god of time who stands at the present with one face looking back and one looking forward. I felt this represented what I was trying to do, make new things out of old materials. In retrospect, this was all too complicated for a business name, but it did inspire me personally and I suppose that was worth the overwrought explanation. :-) Logo design doesn’t come naturally to me so it was an interesting challenge.

These are logos I designed before I knew what the name of the business would be, I do like how they turned out even though they weren’t used.
